National Film Archive of India (NFAI)-SUMMER COURSE IN FILM APPRECIATION 2012



A four-week full-time course in FILM APPRECIATION will be held at Pune from 4th June to 30th June, 2012 under the joint auspices of National Film Archive of India and Film &Television Institute of India. This is an intensive course designed to promote comprehensive understanding and insights into the nature of cinema and other related forms and practices.


These include recent developments like independent films, digital art and diverse practices that come under the broad umbrella of New Media.



National Film Archive of India (NFAI) Pune has been conducting an annual Film Appreciation Summer Course in collaboration with FTII. Participants from different professions from all over India are exposed to the best of Indian and world cinema. Among the major topics taught are the basics of the film medium, cinema as an art, film history, film theory and the relationship of cinema to other arts.

The NFAI conducts shorter courses on similar lines at various other centers in the country in collaboration with film societies, educational institutions and various cultural organizations.

Program objective: 
The Annual Summer Course in Film Appreciation held at Pune is primarily designed to meet the needs of teachers interested in introducing film study activities in educational institutions but would also be useful for film society organizers, film critics, journalists, film researchers, Govt. officials handling films and others interested in film studies.

Duration: Four-week course (Full-time)

Fee Details: The course fee of Rs.8,500/- should be remitted by Demand Draft in favour of “Accounts Officer, Film & Television Institute of India, Pune” only after the confirmation of selection.

Age Limit: The applicant should have completed 21 years of age

Application duly filled in the prescribed format along with fee of Rs.200/- by Crossed Demand Draft payable to Accounts Officer, FTII, Pune - 411 004 on or before given time.

The course is primarily designed to meet the needs of teachers/scholars interested in introducing film 
study activities in educational institutions, media practitioners, film society organisers, researchers, Govt. officials handling films and serious cinĂ©philes.



The curriculum includes theoretical study of the art and history of film and the development of cinema as a medium of art and communication. Conceptual areas of cinema like time, space, mise-en-scene, genres and movement are integral components of the four week long programme.


The participants will be introduced to the changing nature of film production and its evolving relationship with digital arts. Film classics, short films and non-fiction films, both Indian and International will be used for critical analysis and study.


1. The medium of instruction would be mainly English.


2. The applicant should have completed 21 years of age as on 01.04.2012


3. The course fee of Rs.8,500/- should be remitted by Demand Draft in favour of “Accounts  Officer,  Film & Television Institute of India, Pune” only after the confirmation of selection.  Fees once pai d wi l l not be refunded.


4. Hostel accommodation (optional) will be provided by FTII only.  


Hostel Fees of Rs.5,000/- to be remitted by Demand Draft in favour of Accounts Officer, Film &  Television Institute of India, Pune - 4 Advance copy of the duly filled in application in the prescribed format can be submitted through e-mail to nfaipune@gmail.com.  Hard copy of the application alongwith administrative fee of Rs.200/- (Rupees two hundred only) by Crossed Demand Draft payable to Accounts Officer, FTII, Pune should reach the following address on or before 24.04.2012 :
